Why Lumpwood Charcoal?

Lumpwood lights a lot faster (approx 20-30 mins) than briquettes (approx 30-40 mins) and also burns hotter. However, once it has reached its peak temperature, lump charcoal loses its heat quite quickly and, therefore, burns faster than briquettes.

How is Charcoal Made?

Good charcoal is mostly pure carbon, called char, made by cooking wood in a low-oxygen environment, a procedure that burns off volatile substances like water, methane, hydrogen, and tar and can take days. In commercial processing, the burning occurs in silos made of steel or concrete that are very low in oxygen and are stopped before the entire material goes to ash. About 25% of the initial weight is left over as black lumps and powder from the process.
